WHEN THE WOODS WAS RULES BY SAGES-EXAGGERATED PERSPECTIVE

This field has been planted and will soon grow into an annex to the Bosco. Work began here in 2000. Until that year, these four hectares were used to grow wheat.

The large square figures in the foreground appear to be rushing away from the viewer, an example of exaggerated or forced perspective. The “squares” are actually long rectangles whose sides converge on a point, in this case the large tree in the far center.

Exaggeration of perspective was used in 17th. century Italian gardens to add drama to a view, or simply to amuse the visitor with a reminder that things may not be the way they appear.
